The Briars Nursery specialises in beautiful plants indigenous to the Mornington Peninsula, along with a range of Australian natives, all ready to thrive in your garden. The talented team collects seed from local species for wholesale and retail sale to the public. The range includes ground covers, grasses, wildflowers, shrubs and trees.

Plant sale – Saturday 4 July 

For one day only, the nursery is having a sale with 20% off our 6, 8 and 12 inch pots of native trees and shrubs. There is a great selection, perfect for planting now.

The nursery will be open special extended hours, from 8.30am – 3.30pm. 

Come down, chat to the team and get some great additions to the garden. 

*Sale excludes tube stock.

Opening hours

Open Wednesday - Friday from 9.00am to 3.30pm, and the first Saturday of the month from 9.00am to 1.00pm. Closed on public holidays and Total Fire Ban days. 

Location and directions

The Briars Nursery is located at The Briars in Mt Martha. When entering The Briars, follow the road to the top of the hill and park near the Eco Living Display Centre and Briars Camp. Access to the nursery is through the front gate to the left of the Eco House.

Resident Plant Giveaway

Mark your calendars – The Briars Nursery Free Plant Giveaway is back this March!  

Mornington Peninsula residents can collect three free indigenous plants per household from The Briars Nursery on the following dates:  

  • Wednesday 25 March, 9am – 3.30pm  
  • Thursday 26 March, 9am – 3.30pm
  • Friday 27 March, 9am – 3.30pm
  • Saturday 28 March, 9am – 1pm
  • Tuesday 31 March, 9am – 3.30pm
  • Wednesday 1 April, 9am – 3.30pm
  • Thursday 2 April, 9am – 3.30pm  

 (Or until giveaway stocks run out!)  

Whether you’ve got a big backyard or a cosy courtyard, there’s something for every garden. From trees to low groundcovers, the Nursery team has carefully selected a range of tube stock to suit all spaces — all grown right here in Mount Martha, many from locally collected seed.  

All you need to bring is proof of Mornington Peninsula residency!  

Let’s grow a greener Peninsula – one plant at a time.  

Volunteering at the Nursery

The Briars Nursery welcomes volunteers with an interest in growing plants and gardening. Volunteering at the Nursery provides an opportunity to build on existing horticultural skills, meet new people and learn about our local flora. There are a variety of tasks available including propagation, seed cleaning and sorting, planting, potting, weeding. No experience is necessary.

Revegetation plant guides

The Shire has produced 7 regional revegetation guides to assist landowners in identifying local indigenous plants suitable for revegetation and landscaping. The guides are based on seven geographic regions of the Peninsula.  We are able to supply you with these plants or source plants for you.

Gardens for Wildlife

The flora and fauna of the Mornington Peninsula is unique. Your garden can help protect and nurture the beautiful flora and fauna of the Mornington Peninsula.

Mornington Peninsula's free Gardens for Wildlife program is designed to encourage and support residents in creating a haven for local wildlife using local plants in their gardens. These plants are available at the Briars Nursery.

The program is a partnership between the Shire and community members/groups that share the common goal of protecting and promoting our native flora and fauna.
