Community feedback now open (8 weeks)
We’re planning for the future of transport across the Mornington Peninsula, and we need your input!
The draft Integrated Transport Strategy (ITS) Mornington Peninsula Transport To 2040 sets a long-term plan for Mornington Peninsula transport. It provides details on the planning, investment, advocacy and collaboration required to implement this plan.
The ITS is organised around four key objectives:
- Enhanced connectivity – improving connections to towns, employment and recreation with one example being to identify a preferred position on the Southern Peninsula Freeway extension.
- Active and public transport – creating more opportunities for healthier, lower-impact ways to move around by identifying priority footpaths and bicycle routes across the Shire and proposing that more footpaths are shared with cyclists.
- Safety and accessibility – making transport safer, more accessible and easier to use with examples including expanding traffic calming measures and road safety improvements across the Shire and investigating parking improvements in key locations like Sorrento.
- Resilience and future planning – planning for the future needs of our community, for example, by identifying preferred freight routes to support regional and port-related growth in the Western Port region.

About the Previous Consultation
During November and December 2024, we ran a community consultation period to gather feedback and insights on all things transport, including walking, cycling, driving and public transport.
What We Heard During the Community Consultation
We received strong engagement from the community, including:
- Over 800 pieces of public feedback collected
- 386 community surveys completed
- 294 interactive map pins identifying transport challenges
- Four in-person pop-ups, with over 380 face-to-face conversations.
Key Themes Raised
The community highlighted several priority issues:
- Limited public transport frequency and poor connections between townships
- Gaps in footpath and cycling infrastructure
- Safety concerns, particularly at crossings and intersections
- Congestion during holiday periods and school times
- A lack of accessible and inclusive transport options.
A big thank you to everyone who contributed by completing surveys, dropping pins on the map, and speaking with us at our in-person sessions.
What’s the Strategy All About?
The Integrated Transport Strategy focuses on:
- Connecting our community - Making it easier to travel between townships and key destinations
- Supporting sustainable transport - Expanding options for walking, cycling, public transport and micromobility, while reducing environmental impacts
- Safety for everyone - Ensuring transport routes are safe and accessible for all users
- Making life easier - Reducing travel time, easing congestion, and supporting local businesses
- Future-proofing - Planning for population growth and adapting to emerging transport technologies.
What’s Next?
We are continuing the development of the Integrated Transport Strategy. This phase includes:
- Reviewing community feedback
- Working with the Department of Transport and Planning and other relevant agencies
- Refining the Strategy into a final document.
Alongside this work, the current 8-week feedback period provides an opportunity for the community to review and contribute to the draft Strategy.
