Power outage

Power outages occur for many reasons such as severe weather, damaged infrastructure and planned outages for maintenance. During the summer they are more likely to occur due to heatwaves and the need to balance supply and demand. 

Power outages can be extremely disruptive to individuals and businesses. Being prepared can make a huge difference in how affected you are during and after an outage.

Before a Power Outage

During a Power Outage

  • If anyone’s life is in danger, contact 000
  • Conserve power where possible. Have charged devices on power saving mode and avoid overuse. 
  • It is unlikely that the power will remain out for an extended period of time, however it is important to listen out for emergency advice on the Vic Emergency app or website, or tune into ABC radio 774 ABC radio (AM)
  • Be food safe. The Department of Health advises during a power failure, the following actions will keep frozen and cold food frozen or chilled for longer
  • Move food from the fridge to the freezer.
  • If available, put bagged ice under food packages and trays stored in freezers and fridges if power failure lasts more than 1 hour.
  • Place an insulating blanket over cold or frozen food, where possible.
  • Only open fridge and freezer doors when absolutely necessary, this will keep the food and air temperature colder for longer.
